A class 7 student’s heroics saved the day, and about 66 others on a school bus in the US, when he swooped in to brake after noticing the driver had lost consciousness behind the wheel.
A video released by Warren Consolidated Schools shows Dillon Reeves, the quick-thinking Michigan 7th-grader, safely bringing the school bus to a stop on the Masonic Boulevard near Bunert Road.
About 53 seconds in, the driver falls unconscious, and the young hero enters the CCTV field of view shortly after to take the wheel, apply the brakes and turn off ignition when superintendent Robert Livernois said the school bus was starting to veer onto a collision course with what would have been oncoming traffic.
Reeves then shouts out "Someone call 911. Now", while screams from other panicked passengers, around 66 of which were on-board according to Fox 2 Detroit, could be heard.
"A quick-thinking 7th-grade male student saw the driver in distress, stepped to the front of the bus and helped bring it to a stop without incident,” he said in a statement. “The Warren Police and Fire Departments responded very quickly, tended to the driver, and the students were safely loaded onto a different bus to make their way home.”
"The actions of the student who helped stop the bus made all the difference today, and I could not be prouder of his efforts.”
