Massive Eruption of Russia's Shiveluch Volcano Covers Villages in Ash Cloud
Description: Shiveluch, one of Russia's largest and most active volcanoes, erupted in the early hours of the morning, spewing a massive cloud of ash that covered nearby villages and prompted an aviation warning for the Kamchatka peninsula. The lava flows melted snow and triggered mud flows along a nearby highway, while villages were smothered in grey volcanic dust as deep as 8.5cm, the deepest in 60 years. The Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team issued a red notice for aviation, and some schools in the region were closed while residents were advised to stay indoors.
