Tutankhamun was originally named Tutankhaten, meaning "the living image of Aten," when he was born, he was the son of Akhenaten and one of his sisters, he was also the grandson of Amenhotep III. Tutankhaten was a part of the pharaohs who worshiped Aten, the sun disk and under the rule of his father Akhenaten, the traditional gods were banned, and the capital was moved to a new city, Akhenaten (now known as Amarna) to honor Aten. Tutankhaten was still a child when Akhenaten died, he was then placed on the throne by the powerful officials in the court, who wanted to restore the traditional gods and move the capital back to Thebes, and as part of this effort, Tutankhaten changed his name to Tutankhamun, meaning "the living image of Amun." Tutankhamun's reign was relatively short and he died at a young age, his tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922, providing an unprecedented glimpse of the life and culture of ancient Egypt, and specifically the 18th dynasty.
